Abstract:

The workshop explores the range of responses to religious diversity in traditional Chinese society, as well as the dominant paradigms of religious pluralism that are peculiar to China. The discussions will cover a number of religious and philosophical traditions, including Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, Christianity, and popular religion. We will also explore how the Chinese embrace of unique models of religious pluralism, which often involve the simultaneous engagement with multiple traditions, has shaped the construction of malleable, hybrid, and open-ended religious identities. While that contrasts with the exclusive religious identities that tend to be prevalent in traditional Western and Islamic societies, we also need to account for the occasional outbursts of religious intolerance and sectarianism throughout Chinese history.
