Dr Zahid Hussain completed his PhD and post-doctorate qualifications in agriculture from the UK in 2004. This was followed by several years of teaching, research and administrative experience. He remained on several high profile positions including his current responsibility as Pro-Vice Chancellor of his parent University in Pakistan. His research encompasses improving production technologies of crops in order to better realize their genetic potential. For instance, Dr Hussain studied applications and interactions of agricultural inputs in arable soils, especially that of sulphur and nitrogen. Both nutrients are closely related and are linked with global warming and climate change. Nitrogen loss in arable soils, due to sulphur deficiency, not only causes financial loss but harm aquatic life and pollute water resources. Nitrogen loss from arable soils means production of nitrogen fertilizers in greater amounts to meet the needs, which will result into costly yields and consumption of more energy; that in turn would trigger global warming and climate change. Dr Hussain’s study is valuable to the agricultural development as it targets enhanced crop yields under frugal cost of production. As well as the study is of help to mitigating global warming and climate change as caused by inappropriate and non-judicious use of fertilizers in agriculture. Dr Hussain’s recent research interests focus on the development of policies with respect to the role of agriculture in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This would prove beneficial in terms of contributing to the success of CPEC, where ‘Agriculture’ is considered as an integral and prime segment for the economic growth of China and Pakistan.
