Dr Julian Gruin is an Assistant Professor of Transnational Governance in the Department of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam. He is currently also an ESRC Future Research Leaders Fellow in the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick. His research interests span political economy, economic sociology, and Chinese studies, and currently focuses on the transnational development of China’s financial system, and how this is reshaping patterns of power and authority in global finance. He has published in journals across these fields, including Economy & Society, New Political Economy, Review of International Political Economy, and Review of International Studies. His book Communists Constructing Capitalism: State, Market, and the Party in China’s Financial Reform is forthcoming with Manchester University Press, providing an historical analysis of how control by the Chinese Communist Party of the financial system has enabled market reforms whilst preserving stability of the authoritarian regime. He holds a DPhil in international relations from the University of Oxford, where he was the Wai Seng Senior Research Scholar in Asia-Pacific Studies.
