Stephen Kaplan

Stephen Kaplan is an Associate Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University. His research is on the frontiers of international and comparative political economy, where he specializes in the political economy of global finance and development, the politics of macroeconomic policymaking, US-China economic relations, and Latin American development.
His book, Globalization and Austerity Politics in Latin America, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2013, and was selected for Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles in the Social and Behavioral Sciences that same year. The book is based on his doctoral dissertation, which was awarded the 2010 Mancur Olson Award for Best Dissertation in Political Economy by the American Political Science Association. Professor Kaplan is currently working on his second book manuscript, The Rise of Patient Capital: The Political Economy of Chinese Finance in Latin America (under contract with Cambridge University Press), which aims to evaluate the policy making implications of growing Chinese economic interdependence in the Western Hemisphere.
Professor Kaplan has also published articles in The Journal of Politics, Electoral Studies, Latin American Research Review, Review of International Political Economy, and World Development. His research and commentary has also been featured in a range of global media outlets, including America's Quarterly, the Atlantic, Fohla de Sao Paulo, Foreign Affairs, the Washington Post, NPR's Marketplace, and Xinhua News Agency.
