摘要/Abstract
In an era of rapid technological revolution, elderly populations face unprecedented challenges from digital exclusion, amplified by disinformation and scams targeting their vulnerabilities, which usually attack social, economic, political and emotional insecurities. Drawing from empirical research across 10 ASEAN countries (2023-2024), this lecture reveals how insufficient digital competence leaves seniors susceptible to online threats, particularly in rural areas amid global urbanisation trends. By 2034, with projections indicating a surge in the aging demographic to over 60% of the total world’s population globally and urbanisation reaching new heights, these issues will intensify, leaving rural elderly individuals increasingly isolated. This lecture offers a discussion that explores tailored strategies for digital inclusivity in the AI age. Key topics include AI's dual role: as a tool for empowerment and a potential source of disempowerment. The lecture proposes policy recommendations, community interventions, and cross-regional insights from ASEAN to foster resilient elderly communities. Aimed at foreign scholars, it advocates for collaborative, ethical AI frameworks to ensure equitable digital futures, mitigating the risks of marginalised communities’ vulnerabilities and promoting active societal participation.
