The State of China–Indonesia Economic Relations

Speaker: Dr. Siwage Dharma Negara

Dr. Siwage Dharma Negara holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Melbourne. He serves as Co-Coordinator of the Indonesia Studies Programme and Coordinator of the Singapore APEC Study Centre at the ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute, and is an editorial member of the Journal of Southeast Asian Economies. His research focuses on macroeconomic and development issues, particularly industrial and trade policy in Indonesia. Previously, he worked at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences and as an economist consultant for the World Bank Office Jakarta.

Abstract: The lecture analyses China–Indonesia economic relations from the Jokowi to Prabowo period. While China remains Indonesia’s largest trade partner and key investor, the relationship is no longer purely pragmatic. Under Prabowo, Indonesia adopts a more active diplomacy—sustaining ties with China while engaging the United States, Japan, and others—reflecting heightened security concerns amid global uncertainty. The bilateral ties remain robust but are entering a more complex phase shaped by strategic competition, economic asymmetry, and shifting national interests.
