讲座提要:
Lecture 1: Songs on a Very Slow Boat
I'd love to get you on a slow boat to China, all to myself alone.
《诗经》: 从耶稣会到庞德
The Book of Songs 诗经 travels slowly in translation to the West, from the early Latin of the Jesuit Father Alexandre de Lacharme in the 18th century, to James Legge’s High Victorian in the 19th century, Bernhard Karlgren’s philological reconstruction & Arthur Waley’s Bloomsbury ballads in the 20th century. Ezra Pound creates his radical version in the first years of his long stay in the mental asylum of St Elizabeth’s, outside Washington D.C.
Lecture 2, Part I:
The Image of China –
from Chinoiserie to Cathay
Celle que j'aime, à présent, est en Chine;
Elle demeure, avec ses vieux parents,
Dans une tour de porcelaine fine,
Au fleuve jaune, où sont les cormorans
– Théophile Gautier, ‘Chinoiserie’
诗:现代主义与中国
Mademoiselle Judith Gautier in Paris creates the first real Chinese poetry for Europe in her Livre de Jade. The Sinologue Marquis d’Hervey de Saint Denys brings Tang poetry into the aristocratic salons of Paris. Gustav Mahler, in his Das Lied von der Erde, basing himself on Hans Bethge’s Die Chinesische Flöte, draws Chinese poetry into the very heart of European Late Romanticism. After the First World War, Arthur Waley’s translations of the fu 赋, still laden with Edwardian echoes, gradually give way to a new modernist (and sometimes monotonous) method. Among his fellow modernists, Ezra Pound, the Arch-Imagist, uses Fenollosa’s notes to create his Cathay (thereby, according to Eliot’s absurdly pretentious claim, ‘inventing Chinese poetry’). Pound fights it out with the Hippo-poetess, Amy Lowell, and Fir-Flower Tablets 松花笺, her collaboration with her wealthy Shanghai lady-friend Florence Ayscough. In San Francisco, Witter Bynner collaborates with the exiled Chinese man-of-letters Kiang Kang-hu to produce The Jade Mountain, a complete 唐诗三百首. Kenneth Rexroth and Gary Snyder introduce Chinese poets into the Beat world. Forgotten among all this half century of modernist fuss were whole generation of old-fashioned China Coast versifiers such as E. H. Parker (V.W.X.), Alfred Lister, Herbert Giles, Charles Budd and W. J. B. Fletcher. Surely it is high time to do them honour?
Lecture 2, Part II:
Spirit Ditties of No Tone
Translating the Chinese Lyric 词
Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter
译词的境界
Translating Chinese ‘songs without music’ presents an extreme challenge. Father John Turner S.J. sings in sedate Jesuit rhymes. The bohemian John Scott experiments with abandon. C. H. Kwock strums to the San Francisco sound. Translating the lyrics of Soong Hsun-leng 宋训伦: a case study.
Lecture 3: Dancing in Chains
Translating Modern Chinese Poetry
