摘要 | Abstract
Nepal-China relation has passed through amicably since the establishment of diplomatic relation between the two countries in 1955 due to which the image of China in the collective imagination has remained positive. This imagination took a new height when China welcomed the promulgation of Nepal’s new constitution in September 2015 on the backdrop of Indian embargo. The Indian embargo not only undermined the Nepalese sovereignty by expressing dissent to the contents of the new constitution but also compelled Nepal to think about lessening its dependency on India. Consequently, Nepal and China inked a ‘historic’ trade deal in March 2016 that exceptionally revitalised the Nepalese aspiration of coming out from ‘India-locked’ trade and transit. The Deal received big applause from the people and raised the hope of pushing out the country from the dependence on India. In this backdrop, I investigate how and why Nepalese collective imagination has taken the proposed Nepal-China cross-border railway connectivity.
