Abstract

While Education is a fundamental pilar for social and personal development, leading to increased employability and to social mobility, education in Brazil was, until the XX century, only accessible to privileged groups. The universalization of basic education was a great achievement. However, the economically disadvantaged, blacks, women and people with disabilities continued to experience poor access to quality education, especially regarding higher education. Inclusive policies have been designed to tackle historic inequality. The presentation will focus on policies regarding inclusion of people with disabilities and on the role of universities in designing and implementing these and other inclusive policies.
