Abstract

This seminar critically explores the governance and political complexities surrounding China’s expanding investment in Indonesia. While initiatives under the Belt and Road framework have accelerated infrastructure and industrial development, they have also deepened concerns over elite capture, weak regulatory oversight, and fragmented institutional responses. In the context of ongoing political volatility and decentralized governance, Indonesia faces growing challenges in safeguarding national interests and ensuring that foreign capital aligns with long-term strategic priorities. The presentation will analyze how these institutional strains impact state capacity and propose actionable strategies to strengthen investment governance, bolster resilience, and recalibrate Indonesia–China strategic relations within a rapidly shifting global order.
