China Focus Essay Contest

China Focus and the Fudan-UC Center on Contemporary China proudly announce the 2019 China Focus Essay Contest. The fifth annual contest invites students in the United States and China to submit an essay reflecting on US-China relations. Two winning essays will each receive a $1,000 cash prize. Winners and finalists will have the opportunity to publish their work with China Focus. (Chinese announcement)

ESSAY TOPIC:

The United States and China are the world’s two strongest powers. However, the growing competition between the two countries will not just be conducted on a bilateral basis. US-China competition will be a global one fought in regions across the world. Identify one important domain of this competition and discuss one region where this issue will be key and its significance to US-China relations. 

CONTEST DESCRIPTION:

Each entry must be the original work of a student enrolled in any US or Chinese university for the 2019-20 academic year. Collaborative projects are encouraged, but prize money must be split among the collaborators. The contest is open to undergraduate and graduate students only. Entries must be in English. 

Each entry will be reviewed by a panel of judges drawn from the China Focus board of advisers including Professors Lei Guang and Victor Shih. 

Essays should be written in op-ed style (not academic, footnoted papers) with a length of 1,000-2,000 words.

1. Send your submission to us by email (chinafocus@ucsd.edu) with the subject heading: “CFContest-LastName

2. Send from your university email address.

3. Send your essay attached as a PDF.

4. Please include the full name, school affiliation at the end of the essay in the following format:

[University]

[Degree Pursued, Year]; [Nationality/Country Name]
