Sol Mora, Assistant Professor of International Relations, School of Politics and Government, National University of San Martin, Argentina and Researcher, National Scientific and Technical Research Council, Argentina (CONICET), during her stay as visiting scholar at Fudan Development Institute during April 7th to June 19th, 2025, was interviewed by Financial Times’ Chinese to share her research achievements and to comment on the research environment at Fudan. At the same time, she discussed about China-Argentina investments, the economic reformation in Argentina and the relation between theses two countries.
She spoke highly of her visiting scholar experience at Fudan University, noting that such programs advance academic research and foster exchange and collaboration. She commended Fudan's academic resources and its vibrant, collaborative scholarly environment, while emphasizing the importance of understanding Chinese history and culture for comprehending China-Argentina relations. Moreover, it highlights the mutual influence between Chinese investment in Argentina and local land governance structures, noting that Chinese enterprises significantly impact Argentina's food system. While this brings positive spillover effects such as promoting industrial development and enhancing market connectivity, concerns also exist regarding economic diversification and environmental issues—concerns that can be mitigated through cooperation. She argues that the core conflict in Argentina's lithium mining lies not in investor nationality but in the project's social and environmental consequences and related factors, which can be avoided through strengthened dialogue and rigorous environmental impact assessments. Sol recommends that Argentina draw on the Chinese model to design an autonomous development strategy and integrate into “South-South cooperation.”, also affirming the rapid development of China-Argentina relations across multiple fields over the years, asserting that despite global geopolitical tensions, the bilateral partnership will deepen, with substantial potential for cooperation in areas such as green technology.
