His research focuses on how rural communities and social movements in socially and ecologically contested territories contribute to institutional innovation and sustainable governance. His main areas of interest include agri-food systems, environmental justice, degrowth, and grassroots responses to socioecological crises.
In addition to his academic work, Dr. Nogueira has collaborated with major national and international institutions such as the World Bank, FAO, UNDP, and Brazil’s Ministry of Social Development, contributing to public programs in rural poverty reduction, territorial development, and inclusive governance. His research integrates practical engagement and interdisciplinary theory to inform public policy and grassroots strategies for sustainable development.
Dr. Nogueira has conducted research at institutions including the London School of Economics and Political Science (UK), the University of York (Canada), and the Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies (CALAS, Mexico), with support from Brazilian and international research foundations.
His current research explores governance challenges at the intersection of agroforestry industries and contested rural territories in the Global South. By analyzing how local communities negotiate sustainable production models in contexts of competing land-use demands, his work contributes to global debates on just transitions and inclusive rural development.
Dr. Aico Sipriano Nogueira will be a visiting scholar at FDDI from October 9 to December 1, 2025.
