On April 5, 2016, co-hosted by Fudan Development Institute, Fudan-UC Center on Contemporary China and “The Program to Promote China-US Friendship, Trust and Cooperation”, “University·Innovation·China-US Relations” 2016 Fudan Development Forum was held in Lecture Hall ofYifu Building. The organizers invited Chancellor of University of California, San Diego, Professor Pradeep Khosla, Dean of School of Global Policy and Strategy, University of California, San Diego, Qualcomm Endowed Chair, Professor Peter Cowhey and Chair of 21st Century China Program, University of California, San Diego, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia, Professor Susan Shirk to discuss on university, innovation and China-US relations. The forum was moderated by Associate Professor of School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Fudan University, Professor Jiang Changjian.
Prof. Khosla and Prof. Cowhey gave speeches successively on “The Public Research University and the Emerging Global Innovation Landscape”. They pointed out that a good university played an essential role in the positive development of a city’s economy. They explained how to break boundaries among different disciplines to better study and convey global policies, and how to respond to challenges for global economy through innovation. Both of them stressed that a model of cooperation between Fudan University and University of California, San Diego had already been on the track.
In conversation session, Prof. Jiang and all the guests deepened the discussion on strategies to break the boundaries among disciplines, incentive mechanisms for interdisciplinary research, and the environment and culture for innovation. Prof. Khosla believed that apart from innovation strategies, favorable innovation culture and environment is of great significance for talents cultivation. Prof. Cowhey held that governments should play a more active role in supporting the innovation and entrepreneurship of middle and small-sized enterprises. It’d better for local governments to provide information network and talents supports when the entrepreneurs meet problems such as financing difficulties, poor information and etc.
Prof. Susan Shirk, as a distinguished China expert, raised her own view on the future development of China-US relations. She reckoned that to some extent distrusts and potential security threats between China and US still existed for the present, there was also considerable scope for China-US cooperation. “Improving the relationship with China has always been part of US policy”, she emphasized that in the landscape of global challenges she was optimistic on the further cooperation between China and US. So far the achievements were impressive.
There is a long history of cooperation between Fudan University and University of California. The establishment of the Fudan-UC Center on Contemporary China in University of California, San Diego raised the mutual cooperation to a new level. On May 19, 2015, vice president of Fudan University, executive vice-president of Fudan Development Institute, Prof. Lin Shangli attended the overseas Fudan Development Forum and exchanged his perspectives with Prof. Susan Shirk on “China's New Agenda: National Governance and Development” in the Roth Auditorium in University of California, San Diego, which evoked great responses.
Introduction of Fudan Development Forum
Fudan Development Forum, founded in 2011, is hosted by Fudan Development Institute. The Forum is committed to building Fudan University’s academic forum brand with enormous influence. The forum adheres to the purpose of “Share”, “Communicate” and “Contend”. It has already attracted over twenty eminent scholars at home and abroad such as Wang Zhan, Fu Gaoyi, Zheng Yongnian, Cui Liru, Fan Gang, Zhou Qiren, Wang Anyi, Jin Liqun, David Willetts. The forum is supposed to provide the next few years’ tactical prediction and policy advices based on in-depth discussion on tactical issues greatly related with China’s development and reform.
Introduction of the Fudan-UC Center on Contemporary China
The Fudan-UC Center on Contemporary China is the first academic institution established by a major Chinese university in cooperation with a leading North American university. It is based in the School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS) at the University of California, San Diego.
Under the directorship of Professor Richard Madsen, the Center serves to connect all ten campuses of the University of California system with Fudan University in Shanghai. It brings together leading research scholars from both universities for conferences and lectures, and facilitate cooperative research. The Center promotes deeper mutual understanding between the United States and China.
Introduction of the Program to Promote China-US Friendship, Trust and Cooperation
Sponsored by the Ample Harvest Capital, FDDI’s research program on “the Program to Promote China-US Friendship, Trust and Cooperation” aims to build a comprehensive and multi-dimensional platform for conducting research into the politics, society and culture of the United States and China. The program will take advantage of the superior qualities of the relevant disciplines, scholars, academic resources and the strength of policy think-tank at Fudan University. It will help promote the exchange and dialogue among the academic researchers, business leaders and policy experts from the U.S. and China, especially the young leaders from the two countries.
