Lin Fan is currently a University Lecturer at the Institute for Area Studies, Leiden University, the Netherlands. He received his PhD in Art History, Communication Studies, and East Asian Studies from McGill University, Canada, in 2015. His research interests focus on medieval maps and landscape painting, urban life, and material culture. His recent representative papers include “Shadows of Prosperity: Fake Objects and Anxieties in Song Urban Spaces” (2019), “Knowledge, Power, and Technology: A Study of Battle Arrays in Early Northern Song Military History” (2021), and “Memories of Fragmentation: A Cultural Biography of Nanjing’s Porcelain Tower” (2022). His recent publications include the co-authored The Translation and Study of the Shangshu Dazhuan (with Griet Vankeerberghen, University of Washington Press, 2025) and the co-edited Images of Animals and Plants in Premodern China and Japan: Innovation, Experimentation, and Anxiety (with Doreen Mueller, Amsterdam University Press, 2025).
Lin Fan will be a visiting scholar at the International Center for Studies of Chinese Civilization, Fudan University, in June 2026.
