Speaker
Dr. Kerry Ratigan
Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts, Associate Professor
Introduction of the Speaker
Kerry Ratigan (李凯丽) is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts, US. Her first book, Local Politics and Social Policy in China (Cambridge University Press, 2022), examines how local polities shaped social policy provision in China in the early 2000s. Her current research examines how Chinese investment projects impact public opinion of China and state-society relations in Latin America. She has published research in World Development. The China Quarterly, Journal of Chinese Governance, International Political Science Review, and Studies in International Comparative Development, among others. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Master's Degree from the London School of Economics, and a BA in Political Science and Spanish from Haverford College.
Introduction of the Lecture
China's economic involvement in Latin America has increased dramatically in the 21st century. On the one hand, Chinese investment and financing have provided new opportunities for Latin American countries. On the other hand, firms from China are often involved in natural resource extraction, which may entails negative externalities for the environment, needing to avoid conflicts with local communities. However, we know relatively little about how Latin Americans perceive China and how Latin Americans' experiences with Chinese firms over the past two decades have shaped their views. In this talk, Ratigan will present her analysis of Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP) survey data coupled with data on Chinese investments in Peru and Argentina, as well as preliminary findings from fieldwork in South America.
