Over the past decade, China and Russia have deepened and expanded their economic relations. Trade in goods has been a major part of this process but the level of exports and imports remains relatively modest given the size of the two economies and their shared border. This lecture explores the evolution of trade relations between China and Russia since the early 1990s and identifies potential barriers that impede trade flows. Using customs data, the trade patterns are analyzed with regards to goods categories, customs regimes, transportation modes, and various other aspects. An empirical gravity model is then applied to estimate the potential for trade between China and Russia and the actual levels of trade are evaluated relative to this benchmark. The findings allow us to formulate some policy recommendations aimed at increasing the volume and efficiency of Sino-Russian trade.
