Atlanta (November 30, 2023) – For its ninth annual young scholars forum, the Carter Center China Focus is pleased to share that it will co-organize the 2024 Young Scholars Conference on U.S.-China Relations with the the Fudan-UC Center on Contemporary China and the 21st Century China Center at the University of California, San Diego.

This conference will bring together young scholars studying social dynamics in contemporary China and the legal system’s responses. We are soliciting papers from young scholars, defined below, based on their research on topics related to gender, poverty, inequality, the environment, and privacy. While the conference aims to catalyze original evidence-based research on China, it will also convene 1-2 panels that focus on research related to U.S.-China relations, particularly how domestic laws in the U.S. and China are impacting bilateral relations.

We invited young scholars, including advanced graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and early career faculty, to submit papers as described above to participate in our conference. Conference organizers will provide reimbursement up to $1000 USD to selected participants for travel and lodging in San Diego. Meals will be covered during the conference. UC San Diego students and other students interested in the topics presented are welcome to attend.

Additionally, the conference will invited leading scholars in the field to participate in the conference as moderators, discussants, and audience members.

Applicants should submit a brief abstract (under 250 words) and a short cover letter (under one page) describing how your proposed paper fits the conference, the current state of data collection/analysis,  and any other relevant details to help us understand your contribution to the conference.

Applicants should attached PDFs of their abstract, brief description, and CV to the form at the link below. Email any questions to hdoshay@ucsd.edu. The deadline to submit these materials is January 15, 2024. For those that need a visa to attend the conference, we encourage you to submit as soon as possible. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Completed papers should be sent to the conference organizers by May 1, 2024.
