China's President says guidelines from the Communist Party's Central Committee need to be thoroughly implemented to boost what he described as China's strength in cyberspace. Xi Jinping added that high-quality development needs to be advanced in the work being done to protect online data and information. The instructions were delivered to government officials attending a cyber-security meeting in Beijing at the weekend.

President Xi's directive stressed the importance of adhering to 10 key principles outlined in the guidelines for protecting online data and information.

They include Communist Party leadership in managing cyberspace, developing cyberspace affairs for the people, and establishing internet governance with Chinese characteristics.

SHEN YI, Director, Research Institution for Global Cyberspace Governance, Fudan University I think there are at least three aspects that are very important. Firstly, our president Xi Jinping, again, systematically described his blueprint on how to building so called cyber great power in the cyberspace. It means that China needs to develop its information and telecommunication industry in today's times, and China needs to develop its digital economies. And this digital economy is very important, becoming one of the most important driving powers and boosting the development of national economy in general. And the third is to balance the relationship between the security and development in today's quite complicated world. So that can ensure the cybersecurity of China in general ways. This is very important.

President Xi's directives were delivered to officials attending a national meeting on cybersecurity in Beijing, which ended on Saturday. He said China has accelerated efforts to boost self-reliance and strength in science and technology while strengthening law-based governance of cyberspace.

Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, China has made various achievements in cyberspace including establishing the world's largest fiber-optic broadband and 5G networks.
