Over the past two decades, Latin America has experienced repeated shifts between left- and right-wing governments. This lecture argues that these cycles reflect more than changes in policy preferences: they signal a broader process of re-politization, as ideological competition, social demands, and competing development models return to the centre of public debate. While growing polarisation, institutional conflict, and public discontent have generated significant democratic tensions, most countries have avoided regime breakdown and continue to resolve political conflict through elections. Latin America thus offers valuable insights into how societies navigate representation, legitimacy, and governance in an era of heightened political contestation.
