Thomas DuBois is a historian of modern China. He was trained at the University of Chicago and UCLA, has taught at universities in the United States, Singapore and Australia, and held visiting positions in Tianjin and Hong Kong. He is highly fluent in Chinese, and since the 1990s has spent about seven years in China, including extensive periods of fieldwork in Hebei and Shandong provinces. He has received funding from the American Council of Learned Societies, Singapore Ministry of Education, and Australian Research Council, and has published three monographs, eight edited volumes and over thirty articles and chapters, in addition to frequent television appearances and online contributions. His current research is part of a multi-year project on the development of China’s beef and dairy industries. As a historian, he takes a multifaceted approach to this complex topic, and has already published work on regional beef markets, patterns of meat consumption and the early histories of Nestlé and Borden in East Asia. During his time at Fudan, he will examine more contemporary strategies and challenges among producers and importers in Hebei, Shandong and Inner Mongolia, and try to match their activities with state initiatives in commerce, nutrition and ecology.
