Abstract

The creation of the New Development Bank (NDB) motivated a debate as to whether it contributes to foster economic development in the BRICS countries. This report investigates whether financing from the bank to the BRICS countries has effectively enhanced sustainable development opportunities for local communities, presenting case studies of projects that took place in Brazil, South Africa and China. The presented case studies highlight the positive and negative points about these projects so far, thus illustrating the need for the NBD as a transformative institution to finance sustainable development in the BRICS, but also indicating that important challenges lie ahead concerning its environmental framework.
